How to Switch Your Closet to Spring (Plus Organization Tips!)

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

North Carolina has been having the most gorgeous spring weather this past week (I'm talking temperatures in the 70s!) and it has been making me super excited for spring and summer! Last weekend, I decided to switch my closet from all of my fall and winter clothes to my spring and summer clothes, which has made me even more excited for warmer weather!

To save space in my closet and in my dresser, I only keep in-season and every-season clothing out. The rest of my clothes I keep in two large Lilly Pulitzer storage bins that are pictured in this post! This system has worked great for me the past couple of seasons so I figured I would share how I organize with y'all today!

The Before

As y'all can see my closet was pretty messy and I needed to clean it out :)

Here are my storage bins and they were full of my spring and summer clothes when I took this picture!

Step 1: Take everything out of your closet
And I mean everything, even if you know 100% that you're keeping the item! This helps to better form a picture of what you're dealing with!

Step 2: Sort everything into piles
I made 5 piles: in-season to go to my closet, in-season to go to my dresser, out-of-season to go into the bins, donations, and then pieces to throw out. Be sure to keep all of these separate and to also be realistic on what pieces you are putting where.

What was in one of the bins!

Step 3: Remove the clothes you're getting rid of from the room and throw out everything that you need to into the trash
Self-explanatory but place all of the clothes in the donation pile into a trash bag or just remove it from the area. Put all of the pieces in the trash pile into the trash

Step 4: Put all of last season's clothes into the bins and put back into your closet
Put everything you determined as last-season back into the bins and put them away

Step 5: Organize your in-season clothing
This step is based on personal preference. You can organize by color, sleeve length, pattern, or whatever floats your boat!

Organization Tips

Be picky about what clothes you keep while sorting. Ask yourself: "When was the last time I wore this?", "What am I going to wear this to in the next 6 months?", or "What can I pair this with that is currently in my closet?"

Make an effort to put your laundry into it's proper place every day!

Store purses inside of a larger tote bag

Use shoeboxes to store knick-knacks or random items

Use a bag (I used a Lululemon shopping bag) to store all of your extra hangers

How do you organize your closet? Let me know in the comments!

  3. Love your system, Katie! I organize my clothes by what they are (tanks, short sleeved, long sleeved, etc.) and then organize them by color within their category.
