Getting Back to Healthy Eating after Vacation

Tuesday, August 16, 2016

As many of y'all know, I just got back from a two week vacation in Upper State New York (which you can read recaps of here, here, and here). I absolutely loved being up at the lake and spending time with family and friends but let's be honest, my eating habits weren't the best while up there. Like, I ate far too much dessert and unhealthy snacks (hello Goldfish). As a result, it feels like none of my clothes fit and I just feel pretty "blah" in general.

I try to eat fairly healthy and workout on a regular basis (Pure Barre is my latest favorite) so I decided to put together some tips for getting back on track after a vacation of not the healthiest habits.

Drink lots of water
It's recommended that you drink half your body weight in fluid ounces of water of day (so someone whose 125 pound would drink 62.5 fluid ounces of water) so doing this is an awesome way to get back to having a balanced and healthy diet.

Limit your sweets
In New York, I definitely overindulged in dessert. I mean somedays I would have a cookie after lunch, candy at the beach, and then a not-so-little dessert either at home or a restaurant. Simply cutting back on this helps so much, meaning no cookies in the middle of the day haha!

Resume your Workout Routine
Although healthy eating is very important to getting back on track, working out is still important. I personally love Pure Barre but there's so many other ways to break a sweat.

Snack Smart
Snacking is definitely something I need to work on. Having healthy options at home helps so much whether they're yogurt, granola bars, apples with peanut butter, or pistachios.

Have one "treat" a day
Even though it's important not to overindulge when you're trying to get back on track, it's also important not to deprive yourself (especially in the last few weeks of summer vacation). I've found that having one treat, whether it's a scoop of Halo Top ice cream or a cookie, a day allows you to have a little something everyday but also not to overindulge.

Do a Detox Tea
I talked about this a little bit on my Instagram Stories (be sure to follow me here) but my mom and I occasionally do a detox tea to get back on track. Even if you don't lose 5 pounds in a week, it does help to drink more water everyday, which is essential to healthy eating. My mom and I make Jillian Michael's Detox Tea, which you can find here (and be sure to follow me on Pinterest while you're at it).

Be Patient & Don't be Hard on Yourself
Even if your favorite shorts don't exactly fit at the moment, don't beat yourself up over it. Making these changes take time and you wouldn't see you magically fit back into your clothes overnight. Hang in there and you'll see change sooner than later!

What do y'all do to get back on track after a vacation? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I always stick to whole foods like fruits or vegetables! If I'm truly craving something sweet, I like a lightly salted rice cake drizzled with honey and cinnamon. It's perfect and low calorie!

  3. I definitely give myself a little treat every day just so I don't crave sweets so badly that I overindulge. I definitely think drinking lots of water and limiting excessive caffine intake helps me get back on track too! Great tips girl!

  11. These are all great tips! I just got back from traveling for 1.5 weeks and didn't eat very well while I was jetting around. This week, it's been all about drinking a ton of water and snacking on fruits and popcorn and I feel infinitely better already!

  12. To make the transition back to healthier eating after vacation, I make habit of drinking tons of water during the day while I'm on vacation. I find that doing so helps make the transition back to my "normal" eating easier.
