Jack Rogers vs. Tory Burch Millers

Wednesday, April 19, 2017

If there's one thing for spring you should splurge on, it should definitely be a good, high-quality pair of sandals you can wear all the time. If you follow any "preppy" blogs or Instagram accounts (be sure to follow me on Instagram!), you have probably seen both Jack Rogers sandals and Tory Burch's Miller sandals.

I am definitely not a big flip flop person but I wear either Jacks or my Millers every day during the summer. They are both such classics and versatile so I decided I would compare these sandals for y'all to make your decision a bit easier.

I bought my first pair of Jacks freshman year and literally wore them until they fell apart last summer (rip haha!). Jack Rogers sandals can honestly be dressed up or down: I have worn them with norts and a tee, with chino shorts and a cute top, and with dresses. They have so many colors available and you can even monogram them!

Jack Rogers are pricy but they're less expensive than Tory Burch Millers as most pairs are $118. I do get a lot of use out of both pairs of my Jacks so I get my money's worth (same goes for my Millers too!).

Jacks are meant to be broken and worn in so note that your shoes won't look shiny and new forever. My first pair were somewhat painful to break in but the two pairs I got last year weren't bad at all. The navy sole of my navy Jacks did get all over the bottom of feet though haha.

Tory Burch Miller sandals are a bit pricier than Jacks as the average pair of Millers is around $195 but I really love that they have less of a break in period than Jack Rogers. They are a bit dressier also as they make any outfit look more put together and they don't look good with norts and a tee like Jacks do.

They also show less wear and tear than Jack Rogers due to the material. Other than some scuffing on the toes, my Millers that I received as a Christmas present sophomore year still look pretty new.

One thing to note while shopping for Millers is that they offer two different finishes of the leather. The first pair of Millers I have is a patent leather, meaning it is more shiny and I have worn them to the beach without worrying about ruining them. Most of the Millers available on Tory Burch's website are a regular leather that are more of a matte finish.

I honestly can't choose a favorite between Jacks and Millers but I would recommend purchasing Jacks first as they are such a preppy staple and are a bit more affordable!

15 Fun Facts About Me

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Yesterday I sat down to write this post and honestly had no idea what to write about. I typically try to schedule my posts over the weekend so I don't have to work on them during the week but the post-Easter brunch food coma was too real on Sunday so I only scheduled yesterday's post.

I then realized that I haven't shared a "get to know me" post in a while so why not? I love reading about other bloggers and peeking into their lives so I figured this would be a perfect post to share with y'all today: 15 fun, random facts about me that you may or may not already know about me!

image via my Instagram

1. I am a super picky eater and have always been. I don't like a lot of things on my food and only like certain fruits and vegetables.

2. During the school week, I always have a turkey sandwich on a roll with honey mustard, apple slices, and rice chips (or pita chips or pretzels). Like every day of high school, I've eaten this lunch haha.

3. I absolutely love mornings where I don't have to set an alarm but even then, I will still wake up around 8:30 AM.

4. My goal in life is to own a beach house in Kiawah Island, South Carolina. I better start saving now but a girl can dream haha!

5. My go-to outfit this time of year is a pair of Lilly Pulitzer chino shorts, a tee or a tank, and Jack Rogers or my Tory Burch Millers.

6. I find shopping by myself oddly relaxing, whether it's at the mall or at Target.

7. I am definitely a big purse kind of a girl and I have always been. I like being prepared and big purses let me tote my stuff around all day. Like seriously, I use a giant boat tote for a school bag and I get asked all the time if I'm going away for the weekend...

8. My favorite emoji is the sassy hand girl emoji (duh!)

9. A messy room stresses me out so I have to clean my room and put everything away before I can be productive.

10. My go-to Starbucks order is a Grande Skinny Vanilla Latte.

11. I stink at painting my own nails but I definitely feel more put together with my nails done.

12. Even though I love brunch, I am not a big fan of breakfast. I don't like eggs and only really like breakfast on the weekends when I can have pancakes, muffins, or something good haha!

13. I work best with a busy schedule- I don't know what to do with myself when I don't have anything to do!

14. I don't watch a lot of TV (I didn't have time starting junior year so it kind of stuck haha) but make an exception for the Bachelor and Gossip Girl on Netflix.

15. Easiest way to make my day? Fresh flowers, an early bedtime, a coffee catchup with a friend, or a yummy dessert.

Do you share any of these fun facts? Let me know in the comments!

Easter in Lilly

Monday, April 17, 2017

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082, USA
Happy Monday y'all! Easter is always one of my favorite days of the year and I hope y'all had a lovely Easter. One of my favorite traditions is to wear a Lilly Pulitzer dress and I even got my mom to join me this year haha. I "discovered" Lilly in the eighth grade and have worn Lilly for Easter every year since. Freshman year I wore a fit and flare that I love and was actually my first Lilly dress (#youneverforgetyourfirst). I shared my outfits from sophomore and junior years on the blog so it's always so fun to look back at those.

This year, I decided to wear this classic shift dress and I'm so glad I did because it is so cute on. A bit of a heads up though, it does run a bit small and short. I sized up one size from my typical Lilly size and it's still a bit short (but I am 5'7).

I love that the print is so fun and spring-y as it was perfect for Mass in the morning and then brunch at the country club in the afternoon! I will definitely be wearing this dress a lot for different events this spring and I'll also be sharing more of what I did on Easter in Friday's My Chic Week post.

Happy Monday!

18

Happy Friday y'all! Today is a particularly exciting day as 1. it's Friday! 2. it's Spring Break and 3. it's my birthday! To celebrate turning 18, I figured that I would share a fun outfit post with y'all! It's a been a while since I shared an outfit post here on Chic in Carolina but I'm hoping to shoot quite a few outfits here in Florida over my trip so be on the lookout for those in the next few weeks!

As I mentioned before, today is my 18th birthday and I am so excited that I am able to spend my birthday with my extended family at the beach. The last time my birthday fell over Spring Break was back in elementary school so I'm super excited about it. We're having dinner at the beach tonight to celebrate and I'm so excited!

I bought this Lilly Pulitzer dress during Lunch at Lilly (which you can read about in this post) and I am seriously obsessed with it. It has the fit of a traditional shift dress but is more relaxed and loose. It is also so flattering and will be perfect for any events this spring, whether graduation parties, weddings, or brunches!

My Chic Week: April 7-12

Thursday, April 13, 2017

Happy Thursday y'all! Today is my first full day of Spring Break and I am so excited because my family and I are driving down to my grandparents's in sunny Florida! Since my 18th birthday is tomorrow (!!!), I decided to move this week's My Chic Week post to today so I could share a fun outfit post with y'all tomorrow.

With the final days of school before Spring Break, this past week has been both super busy and fun! I'm definitely excited to have some time off of school and spend a lot of time with my family celebrating Easter this week (still in need of a dress? be sure to check out this post)!

Friday was an exciting day as we had our Senior Service Day after a Pancake Breakfast. My group went to a local elementary school and I was able to spend some time in a second grade classroom, which was so much fun.

Friday night, I went out to dinner with one of my friends from elementary school who is considering attending Clemson this fall. We haven't seen each other since middle school so it was so much fun catching up with her.

Saturday morning, I went to a 10:30 AM barre class before working on some schoolwork and blog stuff. I went to Mass with my family Saturday night before a relaxed night at home.

Sunday morning, I was up bright and early for an 8 AM Pure Barre class, which was a good way to jump-start my morning. I worked on a few things for AP Psych and then ate lunch before going to catch up with one of my friends over coffee. We had coffee and chatted for a while before deciding to go shopping. I was able to get a dress for gameday at Clemson this fall that is cute, I'm so excited to wear it. We also grabbed some ice cream since it was so nice out.

I then went to get my nails done for spring break with my mom, which is always a great way to relax. Afterwards, I had some more things to work on for school and ate dinner with my family.

Monday was a busy day as it started the short week before Spring Break. I had two big assignments due on Tuesday for my AP Psych so Monday night was a long one haha. I also worked in the afternoon.

Tuesday was a lot easier once I turned in my AP Psych project in and was fairly low-key other than working on an assignment for AP Lang. I also nannied after school and I took the boys I nanny to Starbucks as well.

Wednesday, I had a half day of school so after school ended, I went out to lunch with family and then spent the rest of the afternoon packing for my trip. I worked in the afternoon and finished packing afterwards.

On my Radar this Week:

1. Spring Break! As I mentioned before, today is my first full day of Spring Break and my family and I are heading down to Florida today. I'm so excited to spend some time at the beach and to also celebrate my birthday and Easter this weekend!

2. If you're as Type A as I am, you'll find this Buzzfeed article both totally relatable and hilarious!

4. Brighton is one of my favorite bloggers and she revealed her closet tour this week- let me tell y'all, it's gorgeous!

5. This workwear outfit from Cara is so cute!

Happy Thursday y'all!

Pure Barre Review

Wednesday, April 12, 2017

If you've been following Chic in Carolina for a while, you know that I take barre classes at my local Pure Barre studio quite regularly. I started going to Pure Barre classes last June (almost a year ago!) and I have been receiving a few questions on how I love Pure Barre classes so I figured I would answer those in a post reviewing Pure Barre for y'all.

I'll start off my post by prefacing that I am not a dancer or gymnast by any means. When I first started taking class, I was totally inflexible and a bit intimidated by the prospect of being surrounded by teeny tiny ballerinas (totally not true!). After not working out all of junior year (which I talked about more in this post), I knew I had to make a change in my routine and after wanting to try Pure Barre for years, I decided to sign up for the New Client Special (one month of unlimited classes for $99).

Since then I've obviously been hooked and have seen so many changes in my body because of it. Each section of a Pure Barre class works on a different muscle group- warmup, arms, thighs, seat (butt), and abs- and works muscles you didn't even know you could work. The class goes by so quickly as each section is followed by stretching and the music is so fun! Before you know it, it is the final stretch of class and you're on your way out the door. Prior to Pure Barre, I considered myself a fairly fit person as I played soccer for years and would run somewhat regularly but after my first Pure Barre class, I was sore for a solid three days. Like it hurt to walk up the stairs sore.

Pure Barre focuses on overall toning your body, which I have really seen after taking classes regularly (3-5 times a week) for almost a year. My calfs and thighs have really slimmed down, I have finally found definition in my arms, and my stomach is so much flatter than it used to be. I'm definitely not "perfect" but I am in better shape than I've ever been thanks to Pure Barre.

Pure Barre has also been good for me in overall wellness as during class, all you focus on is class and what move you're currently doing. Pure Barre also promotes a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle, which I love as you're not always going to eat perfectly healthy all the time but it's important to have a balance. On Fridays, I've had teachers close class by saying "Now go eat some tacos" and the day before Thanksgiving, the teacher said to work hard and think of your favorite Thanksgiving food during the plank portion of class haha.

I also love how welcoming and encouraging the Pure Barre community is. Even if you don't know anybody in your class, there will always be someone to turn around before class begins and chit chat with you. I've run into neighbors, the moms of some old friends, and then other people from different parts of my life, which is always really fun! Whether it's bonding with the girl next to you over how hard that one specific move during seat is or the instructor encouraging you throughout class, Pure Barre is really community-based which I really love.

Pure Barre has its own little lingo, which can be really overwhelming when you first begin to take class. Definitely listen to your instructor as they will correct your form throughout class and will also answer any questions after class ends. When I started taking class, someone told me that it takes 20 classes to figure Pure Barre out, which I totally agree with as you just realize "oh, that's what that means".

In terms of price, I have an unlimited plan, which means I can go to as many classes as I want in a month. That plan is typically $199 a month but since I am in a student, I pay around $150 a month. A single class is around $22 (depends on the studio) so if I go 5 days a week each month, I pay $7.5 a class, which I find reasonable for what you get out of the workout.

Since I do talk about fashion quite a bit here on Chic in Carolina, I figured it would be helpful to share what to wear to Pure Barre. I'm planning on sharing a few workout outfits on the blog soon but Pure Barre requires that your legs and midriff are covered (so no shorts or crop tops). Most of the ladies at my studio wear leggings with a tank top or short sleeve shirt (typically a tank). Wearing a long sleeve makes you too hot during the workout (I learned the hard way lol!) and sticky socks are recommended. I didn't buy sticky socks initially but they make staying in position a bit easier!

Have you tried Pure Barre before? Any more questions you would want me to cover? Let me know in the comments!

Prom Dresses

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Spring is in full spring, which means prom season is underway once again. I realize that some schools have already had their proms but my school (along with a few others in my area) has prom later in the spring this year in late April or early May. Even if you're not a junior or a senior, this can definitely help with inspiration for prom dresses in the future! I'm not exactly sure what my prom plans are quite yet but prom dress shopping is always so fun!

Another option for prom dress shopping is to rent your dress! I'm definitely considering renting my dress since it allows you to get a really nice dress for less, especially since you may not wear your prom dress again. I love that my prom dress from last year (same style but they unfortunately don't have the color I have) is very classic and I hope to wear it to sorority functions in college but renting is definitely a great alternative, especially if you're looking at dresses that are a bit trendier!

Striped Dress ⎢Lavender Dress (under $100) ⎢Navy Dress (I wore this dress last year in a different color) ⎢Gold Dress
Blush Dress (love the back!) ⎢Royal Blue Dress ⎢Lilly Dress (great option if you want a unique dress) ⎢Coral Dress

If you're in high school, have you gotten your prom dress yet? Let me know in the comments!
