How to Know When You Need A Break

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

The end of the school year is so close for us college students yet so far at the same time. I only have a week and a half of class yet and you can tell that the professors are feeling the pressure too with all of the work they've been assigning lately!

One thing that is common when talking to my friends lately is how much we need a break right now. Obviously, we can't exactly take a week-long break or anything until finals are over but I wanted to talk about how to tell when you need a break!

And breaks don't have to be super long or anything crazy! A break to catch up with a friend over coffee or a relaxed night in of doing nothing can be super refreshing too!

You're Burnt Out
With school work, sometimes you get to a point where you're simply burnt out. Maybe it's been a crazy week with school work or you've been having drama with friends or you're simply not getting enough sleep. To me, burn out is definitely a sign that I need to take a step back and re-focus.

You Can't Get Anything Done
I sometimes get to a point that I have worked so hard and so long that I simply can't get anything else done. This can be pretty frustrating but one thing I've learned in college is that sometimes it is better to just go ahead and go to sleep (or maybe just take a break if it's not time for bed haha!) rather try to cram a little bit more info into your brain

You Lack Inspiration
I feel like this applies more towards blogging than school work but sometimes it's hard to get things done without inspiration to do so. Even in school, you sometimes loose sight of "the big picture", especially when you're caught up in gen ed requirements rather than courses that apply to your major specifically. Inspiration can be hard so when I'm feeling uninspired, I like to go on Pinterest (follow me here) or even just take a walk!

You Can't Focus
Don't you love when you're trying to get something done and then you just can't focus on it for the life of you? This can be hard to overcome as your mind simply is elsewhere. Taking a break, no matter how short, is helpful as it helps you re-set and come back to your work refreshed!

You're Overly Stressed
Some levels of stress are good as if you didn't experience stress, you wouldn't feel the need to do anything. But it's not good to experience too much stress (my AP Psych class in high school talked about too much stress and too little sleep and honestly the impacts are scary) so take a step back and take a break.

You're Easily Annoyed
One thing I love about college is that all of my friends literally live within a 5 minute radius of me. Everybody needs a little space at times so if you find yourself getting easily annoyed whether with the people around you or even situations you can't control, give yourself a night of watching Netflix with a cup of tea or hot chocolate!
