Organization Tips & Tricks for the New Year

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

If y'all haven't caught up by now, I absolutely love organization. I was "the organized one" of my high school friend group and I would definitely say that organization makes my Type A personality very happy haha!

I always feel like organization is a priority at the start of each year (new year, new me mentality there haha!) so I wanted to share with y'all some tips to help kickstart a new organized year if that's one of your resolutions.

Make a list of Organization ideas you want to accomplish (or be better at!)
Maybe this year you want to make your bed every morning before heading to class or you really need to clean out your closet this weekend, write a list of all the various organization projects you want to accomplish whether it's a daily act or a project you do every few months or so.

Buy an agenda and use it
If you get anything from this blog post, definitely take the importance of a good agenda! I use the Day Designer agenda and I honestly don't know if I could survive without it. It's such an essential for keeping busy days organized as I keep my daily schedules, due dates, and my to-do lists in it.

Clean out your inbox
I know my inbox definitely gets chaotic and the start of the year is the perfect time to get it cleaned and organized. I utilize folders to sort my mail and then delete emails I need after a few months. I also delete my deleted emails as until they're completely deleted, they'll still take up storage space!

Dedicate an afternoon to that organization project
I absolutely love dedicating an afternoon to getting one aspect of my life organized (my desk or closet, for example). I always feel like having everything physically organized helps me start the year on an organized note and it makes your life easier as you'll be able to find that one item so much easier. Also, this organization project may be an item from your list in my first tip.

Cut out clutter
It's hard to be organized when you have a lot of clutter (whether physical or too many apps on your iPhone/too many downloads in your computer). Take the time to clear the clutter. Donate old clothes you don't wear or delete the apps you haven't opened in months.

Don't go to sleep with a messy room
As a daily task, I try to never go to bed with a messy room. Obviously, life happens so this doesn't always happen but it makes life so much easier the next day when I don't have to add "clean room" to my to-do list. Staying on top of putting everything where it belongs avoids having to do a massive cleanup and I personally feel less stressed when my room isn't a disaster.

Upload documents from last semester to your Google Drive
For high school and college students, the new year also marks the start of the spring semester. If you haven't already, be sure to upload all of your documents from the previous semester or a folder in your documents on your computer to keep everything organized. This makes thing easier if you need to track down an old paper and it also makes space for new items in the new semester.

Write your to-do list the night before
Before going to bed, write down your to-do list and items you need to accomplish tomorrow (like return shirt at the mall or laundry). This always helps me have a more organized day as I don't tend to forget as many tasks and have a productive day.
